Free 11+ practice tests in the GL Assessment format

Timed sections in the GL Assessment format the 19 West Midlands grammar schools actually use, marked the moment your child finishes, with a breakdown showing which topics need work. Nothing to sign up for and nothing emailed before you see the result.

English Comprehension

part of 50%

Fifteen questions on one passage at real 11+ standard: inference that needs two parts of the text held together, figurative language identified and explained, vocabulary in context, plus synonyms and antonyms. Retrieval is only three of the fifteen.

Verbal Reasoning

part of 50%

Four sections of eight, so you see the range rather than one type repeated: hidden words, word building, letter and number codes, and word relationships. Together with English this half carries most of the marks.

Mathematics

25% of marks

Weighted towards multi-step worded problems, where the method has to be chosen rather than just executed: reverse percentages, compound area, rounding in context, combined rates. Four accessible openers, then it gets harder. No calculator, as in the real test.

Non-Verbal & Spatial Reasoning

25% of marks

Cubes and Nets, then 3D Building Blocks, taken straight from GrammarPath Papers 3 and 4. Same figures and the same three minutes a section that the papers allow. This is the quarter of the paper no primary school teaches.

What these can and cannot tell you

The entrance test is written and provided by GL Assessment, as the partnership confirms. None of the partnership schools release past papers. No practice test anywhere, including ours, is the real thing. Every one is an approximation built from the published format, so treat the result as a diagnosis of which topics need work, never as a prediction of a score.

Real marks are standardised by age on a scale the schools do not publish, which is why we will not turn 14 out of 20 into a number on that scale. For how the real scoring works, see our guide to the standardised score, and for when to sit a mock at all, our guide to mock exams.

GrammarPath is an independent tutoring company and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to GL Assessment. These questions are written by us to the published test format, they are not GL Assessment papers.
