Q1BronzeSimplifying and Collecting Like Terms

What is the expression 5a + 3b − 2a + 4b when it is simplified?

Q9SilverSubstitution

When a = 5 and b = 3, what is the value of a² − 2b?

Q1GoldProblems with Two Unknowns

Two numbers add up to 34. Three times the smaller number equals the larger number plus 6. What is the smaller number?

Why this pack works

  • One topic, taken all the way, 140 questions on Algebra alone, not a handful buried in a mixed paper.
  • Every wrong option traces to one specific, named mistake, not just marked “incorrect”.
  • Marks itself. You never hand-mark 140 questions or line up an answer key.
  • Difficulty climbs Bronze → Silver → Gold inside every test.
  • Written for the 11+ maths syllabus every board tests, not tied to one region's schools.
  • Works on any device, and the printable PDF is included at no extra cost.

Try a free timed maths test first.

Twenty questions in twenty minutes, in the GL format, marked the moment your child finishes, with a breakdown of which topics need work. No sign-up.

Is this right for your child?

Buy it if

  • Your child keeps dropping marks on Algebra specifically
  • They have met the topic in class and need it to become automatic
  • You want 140 questions on one topic, not three buried in a mixed paper

Skip it if

  • They have never been taught Algebra, this tests, it does not teach
  • You want broad coverage before the exam, a mixed Maths Pack fits better

Sample explanations

This is what every wrong answer gets

Three real questions from the pack, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Q3BronzeSolving Equations

A number n satisfies the equation n + 17 = 45. What is the value of n?

A62B17C45D28E26
Worked solution
1To undo adding 17, subtract 17 from both sides.
245 − 17 = 28, so n = 28.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Added 17 instead of subtracting it.  ·  B Gave the number that was added rather than n.  ·  C Gave the total instead of n.  ·  E Made an arithmetic slip when subtracting 17 from 45.
Tip for parents

The inverse of adding is subtracting; checking 28 + 17 = 45 confirms the answer.

Q11SilverForming Equations from Words

Leah thinks of a number, multiplies it by 4 and then subtracts 6, and her answer is 30. She also has 12 stickers in her pocket. What number did Leah think of?

A9B6C36D144E12
Worked solution
1Write the steps as a calculation: the number × 4 − 6 = 30.
2Undo the subtraction: 30 + 6 = 36.
3Undo the multiplication: 36 ÷ 4 = 9.
4The stickers are not needed.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: B Subtracted the 6 instead of adding it back before dividing.  ·  C Stopped after undoing the subtraction, before dividing by 4.  ·  D Multiplied by 4 instead of dividing when working backwards.  ·  E Gave the number of stickers, which is not needed.
Tip for parents

The stickers are a red herring; nothing in the question connects them to the calculation.

Q4GoldConsecutive Numbers

Five consecutive whole numbers add up to 190. What is the sum of the smallest and the largest of these numbers?

A38B76C190D78E72
Worked solution
1With five consecutive numbers the middle one is the mean: 190 ÷ 5 = 38.
2The numbers are 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40.
3The smallest and largest add to 36 + 40 = 76.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Gave the middle number instead of the sum of the outer two.  ·  C Gave the total of all five numbers.  ·  D Used 37 and 41 as the outer numbers instead of 36 and 40.  ·  E Worked with four consecutive numbers instead of five.
Tip for parents

The smallest and largest are equally spaced either side of the middle, so their sum is twice the middle number.

How we check

We check the answers before you have to.

Most 11+ material asks you to take the answer key on trust. Ours is machine-checked and the check is tied to the questions by a content hash, edit a question and the build refuses to produce the pack until it has been verified again. That is a gate in the build, not a promise on a sales page.

Every answer re-solvedAll 140 questions were solved again from scratch by a separate check and compared with the stated answer. All 140 agreed.
Every wrong option namedEach of the four wrong options traces to one specific misconception, so a wrong answer tells you which mistake was made.
Checked against the whole rangeQuestions and diagrams are compared across every pack we sell, so nothing you buy twice is the same question twice.

FAQs

Which exam is this for?

11+ maths for GL, CEM-style, CSSE, SET, FSCE, Quest and independent entrance. The 11+ maths syllabus is national, Algebra is on the syllabus for all of them. What differs is format. Every question here is five-option multiple choice against the clock, which mirrors GL and CEM-style papers directly. If your child sits a written-answer paper such as CSSE in Essex or an independent school's own, use these to build topic fluency and speed, then rehearse setting out working on that school's past papers.

Is this one topic only?

Yes, deliberately. All 140 questions are Algebra, spread across 10 sub-topics, so a weak area gets drilled properly rather than meeting three questions on it in a mixed paper.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
