Why this pack works

  • All 5 Making Words 2 question types, 40 questions each: Compound Words, Use a Rule to Make a Word, Complete a Word Pair, Word Ladders and Shuffled Sentences.
  • 150 practice questions, untimed, marked the moment they answer, with the working shown and the reason the answer they picked is wrong.
  • A 10-question Challenge on every topic, 10 questions in 4 minutes, marked at the end with no hints on screen, the way the real test works.
  • Pitched at grammar-school level: 115 of the 200 questions are Gold, with the twists the real test uses, such as hidden compounds, ladders full of near misses and rules that take letters out of order.
  • A short how-to page for every topic: the method, a worked example and the traps.
  • Works on any device, and the 54-page printable PDF is included: every question, a how-to page per topic and the answers and working at the back.

Sample explanations

A worked solution for every question

Three real questions from the pack, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Word LaddersBronzeWord Ladders

Change one letter at a time. Which word is missing from the ladder? SLY → ? → WHY

AWHOBWAYCFLYDSHYESPY
Worked solution
1The missing word must be one letter different from SLY and one letter different from WHY.
2SLY → SHY: L changes to H. SHY → WHY: S changes to W.
3The missing word is SHY.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A WHO is one change from WHY, but not one change from SLY.  ·  B WAY is one change from WHY, but not one change from SLY.  ·  C FLY is one change from SLY, but not one change from WHY.  ·  E SPY is one change from SLY, but not one change from WHY.
Shuffled SentencesSilverShuffled Sentences

The words make a sentence, but they are mixed up and one word is extra. Which word does not belong? a on the class trip teaspoon our museum to went

AclassBwentCmuseumDtripEteaspoon
Worked solution
1Find the words that look like they start the sentence, then build it word by word.
2The sentence is: Our class went on a trip to the museum.
3The word left over is TEASPOON. It makes no sense anywhere in the sentence.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A class belongs in the sentence: Our class went on a trip to the museum.  ·  B went belongs in the sentence: Our class went on a trip to the museum.  ·  C museum belongs in the sentence: Our class went on a trip to the museum.  ·  D trip belongs in the sentence: Our class went on a trip to the museum.
Compound WordsGoldCompound Words

Join one word from each group to make a new word. The first group's word comes first. (1 PLANE 2 RANK 3 NO 4 SENSE) (5 NECK 6 WHERE 7 COMB 8 FOG)

A3 + 7B4 + 6C1 + 6D2 + 6E3 + 6
Worked solution
1Try each word in the first group with each word in the second, first group first.
2NO + WHERE = NOWHERE.
3NO is word 3 and WHERE is word 6, so the answer is 3 + 6.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A NOCOMB is not a word.  ·  B SENSEWHERE is not a word.  ·  C PLANEWHERE is not a word.  ·  D RANKWHERE is not a word.

How we check

We check the answers before you have to.

Most 11+ material asks you to take the answer key on trust. Ours is checked by a program that reads each question exactly as your child sees it, tries all five options, and accepts the question only if exactly one option works and it is the one in the key. It runs every time the pack is built, and one failure stops the build.

Every answer re-solvedAll 200 questions were solved again from scratch by a separate check and compared with the stated answer. All 200 agreed.
No second right answerSequences and number rules are where a sharp child finds a second answer that also works. Every question is tested against every rule of its kind, so only one option can be argued right.

FAQs

Which exam is this for?

GL Assessment 11+ verbal reasoning. These are five of the question types GL uses, in the same five-option format. CEM-style tests mix verbal reasoning differently, so use this for the question types themselves rather than as a mock of a CEM paper.

Why is the practice untimed but the Challenge timed?

A method has to be right before it can be fast. Practice marks every answer straight away and shows the working, so a mistake gets fixed on the spot. The Challenge then hides the difficulty and runs the clock, so you see whether the method holds up under exam pressure.

Can I print it?

Yes. The 54-page PDF has every topic's how-to page, all 200 questions with space to circle answers and time the Challenge, and the answers and working at the back.

Where does this pack fit?

Verbal reasoning questions come in four groups: Maths and Sequences, Logic and Coding, Making Words and Word Meanings. This pack is Making Words 2. Each pack drills its question types one at a time.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
