Why this pack works

  • All 5 Making Words 1 question types, 40 questions each: Missing Letters, Move a Letter, Hidden Word, Find the Missing Word and Anagrams.
  • 150 practice questions, untimed, marked the moment they answer, with the working shown and the reason the answer they picked is wrong.
  • A 10-question Challenge on every topic, 10 questions in 4 minutes, marked at the end with no hints on screen, the way the real test works.
  • Pitched at grammar-school level: 115 of the 200 questions are Gold, with the twists the real test uses, such as a letter that fits three words but not the fourth, letters moved into the middle of a word and words hidden across two words.
  • A short how-to page for every topic: the method, a worked example and the traps.
  • Works on any device, and the 52-page printable PDF is included: every question, a how-to page per topic and the answers and working at the back.

Sample explanations

A worked solution for every question

Three real questions from the pack, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Find the Missing WordBronzeFind the Missing Word

Three letters next to each other are missing from the word in capitals. They make a word on their own. Which word? He threw a smooth ST into the pond.

AMENBSONCONEDNETETOE
Worked solution
1The word in capitals, ST, does not make sense in the sentence.
2Put ONE into it: ST + ONE + = STONE.
3He threw a smooth STONE into the pond.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Putting MEN anywhere in ST does not make a word.  ·  B Putting SON anywhere in ST does not make a word.  ·  D Putting NET anywhere in ST does not make a word.  ·  E Putting TOE anywhere in ST does not make a word.
AnagramsSilverAnagrams

The same letter is missing from both groups of jumbled letters. Which letter completes both words? She ate an [aepp] with her [nhcu].

ALBDCBDZEO
Worked solution
1Read the sentence for meaning first, and guess what the two words should be.
2aepp + L = APPLE, and nhcu + L = LUNCH.
3She ate an APPLE with her LUNCH.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: B Adding D does not let either group make a word.  ·  C B makes BUNCH from one group, but no word from the other.  ·  D Adding Z does not let either group make a word.  ·  E Adding O does not let either group make a word.
Missing LettersGoldMissing Letters

Find the letter that finishes the first word and starts the second, in both pairs. tea ( ? ) ast bea ( ? ) ine

AbBtCmDlEk
Worked solution
1Try each letter in both gaps of the first pair, then check it in the second pair.
2m makes TEAM and MAST.
3m also makes BEAM and MINE.
4So the letter is m.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A b does not make all four words: TEAB and BEAB are not words.  ·  B t makes BEAT, but not TAST. The letter has to make all four words.  ·  D l makes LAST, LINE, but not BEAL. The letter has to make all four words.  ·  E k makes BEAK, but not KAST. The letter has to make all four words.

How we check

We check the answers before you have to.

Most 11+ material asks you to take the answer key on trust. Ours is checked by a program that reads each question exactly as your child sees it, tries all five options, and accepts the question only if exactly one option works and it is the one in the key. It runs every time the pack is built, and one failure stops the build.

Every answer re-solvedAll 200 questions were solved again from scratch by a separate check and compared with the stated answer. All 200 agreed.
No second right answerSequences and number rules are where a sharp child finds a second answer that also works. Every question is tested against every rule of its kind, so only one option can be argued right.

FAQs

Which exam is this for?

GL Assessment 11+ verbal reasoning. These are five of the question types GL uses, in the same five-option format. CEM-style tests mix verbal reasoning differently, so use this for the question types themselves rather than as a mock of a CEM paper.

Why is the practice untimed but the Challenge timed?

A method has to be right before it can be fast. Practice marks every answer straight away and shows the working, so a mistake gets fixed on the spot. The Challenge then hides the difficulty and runs the clock, so you see whether the method holds up under exam pressure.

Can I print it?

Yes. The 52-page PDF has every topic's how-to page, all 200 questions with space to circle answers and time the Challenge, and the answers and working at the back.

Where does this pack fit?

Verbal reasoning questions come in four groups: Maths and Sequences, Logic and Coding, Making Words and Word Meanings. This pack is Making Words 1. Each pack drills its question types one at a time.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
