Letter ConnectionsBronzeLetter Connections

Find the pair of letters that completes the sentence in the best way. FQ is to HS as GU is to ?

Letter-Word CodesSilverLetter-Word Codes

Use the code in the example to answer the question. If the code for FAST is HCUV, what does VQTP mean?

Number-Word CodesGoldNumber-Word Codes

Match the codes to the words, then answer the question. Words: RACE, HEAR, ACRE, HARE. Codes, in a different order: 3761, 7561, 6751. What is the code for HEAR?

Why this pack works

  • All 5 Logic and Coding question types, 40 questions each: Letter Connections, Letter-Word Codes, Number-Word Codes, Explore the Facts and Solve the Riddle.
  • 150 practice questions, untimed, marked the moment they answer, with the working shown and the reason the answer they picked is wrong.
  • A 10-question Challenge on every topic, 10 questions in 4 minutes (Explore the Facts gets 8, as there is more to read), marked at the end with no hints on screen, the way the real test works.
  • Pitched at grammar-school level: 115 of the 200 questions are Gold, with the twists the real test uses, such as codes that go round the alphabet, mirror codes and fact puzzles with six children.
  • A short how-to page for every topic: the method, a worked example and the traps.
  • Works on any device, and the 72-page printable PDF is included: every question, a how-to page per topic and the answers and working at the back.

Is this right for your child?

  • They know these question types but slow down or slip when the clock is running
  • You want each question type practised properly before moving on to mixed papers

Skip it if

  • Your child's test has no verbal reasoning, or is CEM-style, check the school's test first
  • You want full mixed mock papers, this drills five question types one at a time

A worked solution for every question

Three real questions from the pack, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Explore the FactsBronzeExplore the Facts

Read the information, then answer the question. Five friends, Dev, Leah, Noah, Priya and Ruby, ran a race. There were no ties. Leah came third. Leah finished ahead of Ruby. Priya came fourth. In which place did Ruby finish?

A1stB2ndC3rdD4thE5th
Worked solution
1Start with the facts that fix a place, then fit the others around them.
22 orders fit every fact, for example: Noah, Dev, Leah, Priya, Ruby (finishing order); Dev, Noah, Leah, Priya, Ruby (finishing order).
3In every one, Ruby is fifth.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Ruby cannot be first: no order that fits every fact puts Ruby there.  ·  B Ruby cannot be second: no order that fits every fact puts Ruby there.  ·  C Ruby cannot be third: no order that fits every fact puts Ruby there.  ·  D Ruby cannot be fourth: no order that fits every fact puts Ruby there.
Solve the RiddleSilverSolve the Riddle

Use the clues to find the word. My first is in RIB but not in PARTY. My second is in ABLE but not in CUBE. My third is in HARD but not in THAT. My fourth is in NEED but not in UPSET. What word am I?

AEARNBBARECBARNDBORNECARD
Worked solution
1My first is in RIB but not in PARTY. Letters in RIB that are not in PARTY: B, I.
2My second is in ABLE but not in CUBE. Letters in ABLE that are not in CUBE: A, L.
3My third is in HARD but not in THAT. Letters in HARD that are not in THAT: D, R.
4My fourth is in NEED but not in UPSET. Letters in NEED that are not in UPSET: D, N.
5Try the letters in order until they make a real word: BARN.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Clue 1 rules it out: E is not in RIB.  ·  B Clue 4 rules it out: E is in UPSET too.  ·  D Clue 2 rules it out: O is not in ABLE.  ·  E Clue 1 rules it out: C is not in RIB.
Letter ConnectionsGoldLetter Connections

Find the pair of letters that completes the sentence in the best way. IK is to NE as YA is to ?

AUDBSUCTUDDGEDU
Worked solution
1I to N: the first letter moves 5 forward. Y + 5 = D. Going past Z, carry on from A.
2K to E: the second letter moves 6 back. A − 6 = U. Going back past A, carry on from Z.
3So YA is to DU.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A The letters are the right way round in the example. Keep the same order.  ·  B Used the other letter's jump. Each letter has its own rule.  ·  C Moved the first letter the wrong way.  ·  D Moved the second letter the wrong way.

Practise it slowly, then prove it fast.

How we check

We check the answers before you have to.

Most 11+ material asks you to take the answer key on trust. Ours is checked by a program that reads each question exactly as your child sees it, tries all five options, and accepts the question only if exactly one option works and it is the one in the key. It runs every time the pack is built, and one failure stops the build.

Every answer re-solvedAll 200 questions were solved again from scratch by a separate check and compared with the stated answer. All 200 agreed.
No second right answerSequences and number rules are where a sharp child finds a second answer that also works. Every question is tested against every rule of its kind, so only one option can be argued right.

FAQs

Which exam is this for?

GL Assessment 11+ verbal reasoning. These are five of the question types GL uses, in the same five-option format. CEM-style tests mix verbal reasoning differently, so use this for the question types themselves rather than as a mock of a CEM paper.

Why is the practice untimed but the Challenge timed?

A method has to be right before it can be fast. Practice marks every answer straight away and shows the working, so a mistake gets fixed on the spot. The Challenge then hides the difficulty and runs the clock, so you see whether the method holds up under exam pressure.

Can I print it?

Yes. The 72-page PDF has every topic's how-to page, all 200 questions with space to circle answers and time the Challenge, and the answers and working at the back.

Where does this pack fit?

Verbal reasoning questions come in four groups: Maths and Sequences, Logic and Coding, Making Words and Word Meanings. This pack is Logic and Coding. Each pack drills its question types one at a time.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
