Why this pack works

  • All 5 Maths and Sequences question types, 40 questions each: Complete the Sum, Letter Sequences, Number Sequences, Related Numbers and Letter-Coded Sums.
  • 150 practice questions, untimed, marked the moment they answer, with the working shown and the reason the answer they picked is wrong.
  • A 10-question Challenge on every topic, 10 questions in 4 minutes, marked at the end with no hints on screen, the way the real test works.
  • Pitched at grammar-school level: 115 of the 200 questions are Gold, with the twists the real test uses, such as steps that grow, mirror pairs and two rules taking turns.
  • A short how-to page for every topic: the method, a worked example and the traps.
  • Works on any device, and the 53-page printable PDF is included: every question, a how-to page per topic and the answers and working at the back.

A worked solution for every question

Three real questions from the pack, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Complete the SumBronzeComplete the Sum

Find the number that completes the sum. 19 + 19 = 8 + ( )

A29B30C31D38E46
Worked solution
1Work out the left-hand side first, the side with no gap: 19 + 19 = 38.
2So 8 + ( ) must also make 38.
38 plus what makes 38? 38 − 8 = 30.
4Check: 8 + 30 = 38 ✓
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A An adding or taking-away slip: check by putting the answer back into the sum.  ·  C An adding or taking-away slip: check by putting the answer back into the sum.  ·  D Gave the value of the other side, not the missing number.  ·  E Added 8 on instead of taking it away.
Related NumbersSilverRelated Numbers

Find the number that completes the last set in the same way as the first two. ( 11 [ 12 ] 7 ) ( 8 [ 3 ] 7 ) ( 10 [ ? ] 6 )

A4B10C11D12E16
Worked solution
1First set: 11 and 7 make 12. The rule is (a − b) × 3: (11 − 7) × 3 = 12.
2Check the second set: (8 − 7) × 3 = 3 ✓
3Last set: (10 − 6) × 3 = 12.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Used a different rule from the one in the example sets.  ·  B This rule works for the first set but not the second. Always check both sets.  ·  C A working-out slip. Check the rule on the first two sets again.  ·  E Used a different rule from the one in the example sets.
Letter SequencesGoldLetter Sequences

Find the pair of letters that completes the series. DW EV GT JQ ?

AMMBNNCMNDNMEOM
Worked solution
1First letters: D → E → G → J → N. The letter the jump changes by the same amount each time: +1, +2, +3, +4.
2Second letters: W → V → T → Q → M. The letter the jump changes by the same amount each time: −1, −2, −3, −4.
3So the missing pair is NM.
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Used the same jump as last time for the first letter. Look at how the jumps change.  ·  B Used the same jump as last time for the second letter. Look at how the jumps change.  ·  C Swapped the two letters round.  ·  E Miscounted the jump for the first letter by one.

How we check

We check the answers before you have to.

Most 11+ material asks you to take the answer key on trust. Ours is checked by a program that reads each question exactly as your child sees it, tries all five options, and accepts the question only if exactly one option works and it is the one in the key. It runs every time the pack is built, and one failure stops the build.

Every answer re-solvedAll 200 questions were solved again from scratch by a separate check and compared with the stated answer. All 200 agreed.
No second right answerSequences and number rules are where a sharp child finds a second answer that also works. Every question is tested against every rule of its kind, so only one option can be argued right.

FAQs

Which exam is this for?

GL Assessment 11+ verbal reasoning. These are five of the question types GL uses, in the same five-option format. CEM-style tests mix verbal reasoning differently, so use this for the question types themselves rather than as a mock of a CEM paper.

Why is the practice untimed but the Challenge timed?

A method has to be right before it can be fast. Practice marks every answer straight away and shows the working, so a mistake gets fixed on the spot. The Challenge then hides the difficulty and runs the clock, so you see whether the method holds up under exam pressure.

Can I print it?

Yes. The 53-page PDF has every topic's how-to page, all 200 questions with space to circle answers and time the Challenge, and the answers and working at the back.

Where does this pack fit?

Verbal reasoning questions come in four groups: Maths and Sequences, Logic and Coding, Making Words and Word Meanings. This pack is Maths and Sequences. Each pack drills its question types one at a time.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
