Sample explanations

This is what every wrong answer gets

Three real questions from the paper, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Q1BronzeNumber and place value

A factory in Bournville made 24,608 chocolate bars in a year. What is the value of the digit 4 in this number?

A4B40C400D4,000E40,000
Worked solution
1Read the columns from the right
28 units, 0 tens, 6 hundreds, 4 thousands, 2 ten thousands
3The digit 4 sits in the thousands column
44 × 1,000 = 4,000
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A reads the digit itself rather than its value  ·  B reads 4 as the tens digit  ·  C reads 4 as the hundreds digit  ·  E reads 4 as the ten thousands digit, one column out
Tip for parents

Place value. Have the child write the column headings above the number before answering. Counting the columns from the left is the commonest error.

Q6SilverPunctuation

This passage was written in 1872. What job does the semicolon do in line 13: "hollow places underneath; huge caverns, and winding ways"?

AIt shows that a word has been left outBIt marks the end of the sentenceCIt separates two speakersDIt shows a change of subjectEIt introduces an explanation of what those hollow places were
Worked solution
1The semicolon separates a general statement from the detail that unpacks it: first "hollow places", then what those places actually were. It does not end the sentence, the sentence runs on, and nothing has been left out.
Tip for parents

Punctuation. Ask what the mark points at. A semicolon holds two related ideas in one sentence; a full stop would have broken the link.

Q5GoldShuffled Sentences

Which option completes it?

AnobodyBaloneCvillageDthemselvesEwould
Worked solution
1Rearranged, the words make: “Nobody in the village would walk that road alone.” Every word is used except “themselves”, which has no place in that sentence.
Tip for parents

Shuffled sentences. Find the verb first, then the person doing it, the sentence usually builds itself from there, and the leftover word is whatever will not fit.

How we check

We check the paper before you sit it.

A mock is only worth sitting if the marking is right. Every answer is checked against the key, the paper is sat start to finish before it goes on sale, and the copy you download has no way to peek at the answers.

No answers in the copy you getThe file sold has preview mode removed, and the mark scheme stays locked until the paper is finished.
A mark scheme that answers everythingEvery question in the printed paper has a worked answer in the mark scheme at the back, checked question by question.
Sat end to end before releaseThe whole paper was sat in a browser as a live test: every section timed and locked, then the results, the age adjustment and the analysis checked.

    FAQs

    Who writes these papers?

We do. It is our own paper, written in the GL format the West Midlands grammar schools use. It is not produced by, endorsed by or affiliated with GL Assessment or the King Edward VI Foundation.

    What does the score mean?

The paper is marked and the score is adjusted for your child's age, with the adjustment shown so you can see how it was worked out. It is a transparent method of our own and is marked provisional; it does not reproduce GL's own tables, and it cannot predict or guarantee an offer. The school comparison is indicative only: real offers also depend on distance, category and the waiting lists, which are not published yet.

    Which sections does it cover?

All four: English Comprehension (15), Verbal Reasoning (24), Mathematics (18), Non-Verbal Reasoning (24). The non-verbal section is included in the paper you buy.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
