Sample explanations

This is what every wrong answer gets

Three real questions from the paper, with the explanation exactly as it appears in the mark scheme, one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold.

Q1BronzeAddition and subtraction

A library in Selly Oak had 1,842 books on its shelves. It received 367 more books and then donated 209 books to a local school. How many books does the library have now?

A1,966B2,000C2,018D2,209E2,418
Worked solution
1Add the new books
21,842 + 367 = 2,209
3Subtract the donated books
42,209 − 209 = 2,000
Where marks are lost
Every wrong option is a specific error: A Subtracted 209 before adding 367  ·  C Arithmetic slip carrying the hundreds  ·  D Stopped after the addition and never subtracted  ·  E Added 209 instead of subtracting it
Tip for parents

Stopping after the addition, at 2,209. Two things happen to the books. Do both before choosing.

Q6SilverInference from evidence

"Betty had never been taught to bend wire." What does this tell us?

AShe worked it out for herselfBShe was copying another crowCShe had done it beforeDThe researchers helped herEIt was an accident
Worked solution
1If she was never taught and never watched another crow (lines 5-6), the solution can only have come from Betty herself. B and C are ruled out by the same lines; the passage calls the act an invention, not an accident.
Tip for parents

Inference. The answer is not stated; it follows from two facts given a line apart.

Q5GoldNumber Sequences

What number continues this sequence? 1, 4, 13, 40, ?

A81B120C121D124E160
Worked solution
1Each term is three times the one before, plus 1.
Tip for parents

Multiply-then-adjust again, this time trebling. Worth doing straight after Q3 so the pupil sees it is the same method with different numbers.

How we check

We check the paper before you sit it.

A mock is only worth sitting if the marking is right. Every answer is checked against the key, the paper is sat start to finish before it goes on sale, and the copy you download has no way to peek at the answers.

No answers in the copy you getThe file sold has preview mode removed, and the mark scheme stays locked until the paper is finished.
A mark scheme that answers everythingEvery question in the printed paper has a worked answer in the mark scheme at the back, checked question by question.
Sat end to end before releaseThe whole paper was sat in a browser as a live test: every section timed and locked, then the results, the age adjustment and the analysis checked.

    FAQs

    Who writes these papers?

We do. It is our own paper, written in the GL format the West Midlands grammar schools use. It is not produced by, endorsed by or affiliated with GL Assessment or the King Edward VI Foundation.

    What does the score mean?

The paper is marked and the score is adjusted for your child's age, with the adjustment shown so you can see how it was worked out. It is a transparent method of our own and is marked provisional; it does not reproduce GL's own tables, and it cannot predict or guarantee an offer. The school comparison is indicative only: real offers also depend on distance, category and the waiting lists, which are not published yet.

    Which sections does it cover?

All four: English Comprehension (15), Verbal Reasoning (24), Mathematics (18), Non-Verbal Reasoning (24). The non-verbal section is included in the paper you buy.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It's a link that opens in the browser on a laptop, tablet or school Chromebook. The PDF is a normal download.

How long do I have access?

Permanently. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and the PDF is yours to keep and reprint.
